The fact of the matter is that there are many outstanding veterans who were never interested in applying for a job because they lacked the qualifications or the personality to get ahead climbing the corporate ladder. As a former service member, I can tell you from personal experience that the skills and work ethic you need as an employer are there in abundance with most veterans.
Give Veterans Priority

In today’s economy, jobs are not always readily available, and most people have at least some level of education that they need to advance in the career ladder. The lack of qualified job-seekers has created a huge demand for trained veterans in all different areas of the work-force. Due to the lack of available jobs veterans are forced to transition into the workforce from one stage of their career to the next in order to support themselves and their families.
Military Experience is Useful
Military experience is one of the primary benefits that employers should look for when screening job-seekers. However, the problem is that most of us have either never been in the military or haven’t had any type of military experience. There are many individuals who come into the workplace with a number of different types of personal problems that prevent them from progressing to a higher level in their position. Very few individuals have served in the military and gained the necessary skills that are required of them for success within the workplace. This is why employers should hire veterans and give them top priority when it comes to recruiting workers with military experience.

What veterans bring to civilian workplaces is an attitude of teamwork, tenacity, loyalty, and a sense of accomplishment. These are not hard or fast qualities to possess. It takes time to develop these traits but veterans have them. Many of these qualities were acquired through service in combat. It takes a certain mental attitude to adjust to civilian life but veterans know how to re-adjust quickly.

Well, aside from the skills mentioned above, veterans also have the attitude and character to drive. These traits are what employers are looking for because they will need workers with these qualities on a daily basis. When an employer realizes that an individual has the ability to get along with others, handle stress, and remain productive, the hiring process moves forward smoothly.

You should know that you have the ability to be successful as long as you are willing to commit yourself to the job. The advantages and the pros and cons of hiring veterans for construction are quite obvious to anyone who has ever dealt with them. The aim of these days is to remember those who served their country and to raise awareness about the adverse effects on veterans from the various war and peace periods, including Australian military service. So, how can I help veterans at work?

The first step to helping a veteran in employment is to ensure they have all the relevant training and qualifications they need. Some veterans have specialised training in particular areas, such as psychology, physical therapy, computer skills and even foreign languages. If you can’t provide all this training on your own, consider getting a qualified mentor to help. Having someone to guide you through the process is very beneficial to those who are just starting out.
Qualifications for Veterans
Getting the relevant qualifications is only part of the process. You also need to demonstrate you have the interest and commitment to the job. A lot of veterans face psychological issues when returning from war and some don’t get along with their colleagues. The myth that veterans make better employees continues to circulate in popular culture. Part of this myth is the old “follow the money” axiom. Another myth is that veterans are less likely to take vacations and get sick than others. This is just not true, as many veterans go on vacations, are active-duty military personnel, and get sick at the same rate as everyone else.
Dispelling the Myths
One myth is that veterans make lousy employees because they have a “hard head.” While there may be some truth to this, most veterans come with an “outside the box” attitude. This often brings them to the top of the food chain without being mean or cruel. Often, they are more competitive in their abilities and are able to rise above the less qualified to achieve the highest positions. Often the best employees in the world are veterans.
All Defence Personnel
Another myth is that navy nurses and air force pilots are better suited for pilot jobs than enlisted air force personnel. Again, this is simply not true. As I said earlier many veterans go on to become the best pilots or nurses in the world. All branches of service have their share of highly qualified leaders.
Not Just for Battle Zones
The third myth is that veterans only apply for jobs in major battle zones. It is true that many veterans end up in these jobs. However, it would not be fair to label every vet who applies for a combat zone as weak or bad employees. In fact, many of the best military performers come from non-traditional college programs and many have become well-known speakers and sought-after speakers in their field.
Working with Others
The fourth myth is that veterans make poor employees because they are not good with people. This could not be further from the truth. Many veterans have overcome adversity and are able to work with people from all walks of life. They have been promoted, fired, and experienced trauma. All the while they excelled in their job.
Not Overrated
The fifth myth is that veterans are overrated. Again, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Veterans deserve a good-paying job and are often much more qualified and able to do the job than non-vets.
Jack of all Trades
The sixth myth is that all veterans should try to be everything to everyone. That is impossible and does not work in the world today. In fact, if you are a veteran and have been in a bad position at work it is very likely that you will do whatever it takes to make yourself into the most desirable employee possible. In this case being everything to everyone also means you will be a monster and bosses love that.
Workforce Heroes
Some vets choose to be in the military. I know many who have great careers in the business world. Most of them didn’t start out as heroes but did fight and die for their country. All veterans make better employees in the business world if they have the right skills and attributes.
